Callum Smith trends on Google: Boxing’s next superstar?

By Lee Cleveland, Polls and Trends - November 18, 2020

On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, boxing’s undefeated super middleweight champion Callum Smith (27-0, 19 KO) trended as a hot search on Google.

Smith, 30, shared the search spotlight with other notable topics of the day such as NBA Draft 2020, George Clooney and NYC Schools.

Why is Smith a person of interest?

The 6’3″ British boxer is confirmed to face icon Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2 36 KO) on December 19. At stake will be Smith’s lineal RING Magazine super middleweight title. Hence, there are other “belt holders” in the 168 pound division but Smith is regarded by experts as the one and true “champion.”

Can Smith defeat the most admired active fighter in boxing? If so, expect to hear a lot more about him in 2021.

Love it
Fans insisting Canelo vs Smith is a mismatch in Alvarez’s favor don’t understand the sport. Not only is Smith an elite-level champion, he’s strong, technically solid and will boast a seven-inch height advantage to go along with a surplus of eight inches in reach.

And yes, he’s quite polished. An accomplished amateur, Callum represented the United Kingdom at the 2012 Olympics. Moreover, he ‘fights tall,’ maximizing his height and reach advantages over opponents.

Opinion: Smith is arguably the toughest opponent for Canelo Alvarez from middleweight to super middleweight; And a win against the awesome Mexican superstar would certainly create a lot of lucrative, high-profile opportunities for Smith, who is still relatively obscure outside of Europe.

Keep your eyes on this match-up.

Styles make fights and Smith’s ring credentials, size, and technical form suggest he has a decent shot to manufacture the upset.

Canelo vs Smith will take place on DAZN on December 19.
